Kaziranga National Park

About

This park is a mosaic of “Elephant Grass,” marshlands, and tropical moist broadleaf forests. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the premier destination for a one-horned rhino safari, representing one of the last unmodified natural areas in the north-eastern region of India.

History

Following Mary Curzon’s intervention in 1905, the area was designated a “Reserved Forest.” It survived decades of poaching threats through one of the strictest wildlife conservation laws in the world. In 1985, its “outstanding universal value” was recognized by UNESCO.

Wildlife in Kaziranga national park

  • Great Indian One-horned Rhinoceros: Kaziranga is home to over 2,600 rhinos, accounting for about two-thirds of the world’s population.

  •  Asian Elephant: Large herds are commonly seen moving through the tall elephant grass.
