Marine National Park
About
Located in the Gulf of Kutch, this is a unique “underwater” park consisting of an archipelago of 42 islands. It is famous for being the only place in India where you can view living coral reefs, sea anemones, and octopuses by simply walking on the seabed during low tide without needing to dive.
History
Established in 1982, it was the very first Marine National Park in India. Its creation marked a significant shift in Indian conservation, moving focus from land-based mammals to the protection of fragile coastal ecosystems like mangroves and coral reefs.
Wildlife of Marine National Park
- Octopus: Famous for their camouflage; guides often help spot them hiding under rocks or in crevices.
- Pufferfish: A favorite for tourists to see up close; they “puff up” as a defense mechanism when they feel threatened.
- Dolphins: Often spotted in the deeper waters near the islands, especially during boat transitions.
- Sea Turtles: The sandy beaches of the islands are crucial nesting grounds for Green Sea Turtles and Olive Ridleys.
- Corals (Brain & Star Corals): Over 50 species of hard and soft corals that create a vibrant “underwater forest” visible at low tide.
- Migratory Birds: Huge flocks of Flamingos, Pelicans, and the rare Crab Plover gather on the mudflats during winter.
Safari Zones (The Accessible Islands)
- Narara Island (The Walkable Zone): This is the most popular “safari” area. You don’t need a boat, it is connected by road. You drive to the shore and then take a “Coral Walk” (approx. 2–3 km) onto the exposed seabed during low tide.
- Pirotan Island (The Boat Safari Zone): Accessible only by boat from Bedi Port or Nava Port in Jamnagar.
Best Time to Visit
- October to March is the peak season. The weather is pleasant for walking on the open seabed, and migratory birds are at their highest numbers.
- The “Tide” Rule: You can only enter the park during Low Tide. The “safari” usually lasts about 3 or 4 hours between two high tides.
Safari Timings
