Mudumalai National Park

About

Situated at the tri-junction of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala, Mudumalai is a critical elephant corridor. It is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere and offers a mix of tropical moist and dry forests.

History

Established in 1940, it is one of the oldest wildlife sanctuaries in India. It gained recent global fame as the filming location for the Oscar-winning documentary “The Elephant Whisperers.”

Wildlife of Mudumalai

  • Asian Elephant: The park’s signature species. You’ll find them in large herds, especially near the Moyar River.
  • Royal Bengal Tiger: Mudumalai has a very high tiger density, with the dense Sal and Teak forests providing perfect cover.
  • Indian Gaur (Bison): These massive, powerful herbivores are a common sight in the forest clearings.
  • Indian Leopard: Often seen on the rocky outskirts and higher ridges, though they remain more elusive than the tigers.
  • Malabar Giant Squirrel: A colorful, large squirrel often spotted in the tree canopies near the Theppakadu area.
  • Sloth Bear: Occasionally spotted during early morning or late evening safaris, foraging for termites and honey.

Zones

  • Theppakadu (Main Safari Hub): This is the “nerve center” of the park. Most official Government Bus (Van) Safaris and Elephant Safaris start from here.
  • Masinagudi Range: Known for its rugged terrain and proximity to the Sigur Plateau. It is a hotspot for spotting Leopards and Hyenas
  • Kargudi & Mudumalai Ranges:  These are the deeper core areas with dense forest cover. They offer the most serene environment and are excellent for birdwatching and spotting large mammals.

Best Time to Visit

  • March to May: As the vegetation thins out in the heat, animals gather at the remaining water sources like the Moyar River, making sightings more predictable.
  • October to February: The weather is cool and pleasant (15°C to 25°C). The forest is lush, and migratory birds are in abundance.
  • June to September: The region receives heavy rain. While the forest looks stunning, safari tracks can become muddy and inaccessible, and sightings are generally lower.
