Nagarhole National Park

About

Also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park, it is world-renowned for its sightings of the Black Panther (Saaya). The park is bordered by the Kabini River, which attracts massive herds of elephants during the summer.

History

Once the exclusive hunting ground for the Wodeyar Dynasty of Mysore, it was named after the “Naga” (Snake) and “Hole” (Stream) that winds through the forest like a serpent.

Wildlife of Nagarhole

  • Black Panther: Nagarhole (specifically the Kabini area) is the only place in India where you can reliably spot a melanistic leopard. The resident “ghost of the forest” is a global celebrity for photographers.
  • Royal Bengal Tiger: The park has a high tiger density. They are often seen patrolling the forest roads or resting near the waterholes in the central zone.
  • Asian Elephant: Part of the world’s largest congregation of Asian Elephants. During summer, hundreds of elephants gather on the banks of the Kabini River.
  • Indian Leopard: Aside from the Black Panther, common spotted leopards are very active here, often seen lounging on the massive teak or rosewood trees.
  • Indian Wild Dog (Dhole): Nagarhole is one of the best places to witness the coordinated hunting of Dhole packs in the open forest clearings.
  • Gaur (Indian Bison): These massive, muscular wild cattle are a common sight, often seen in large herds grazing near the river.

Zones

  • Zone A (Wooded/Inland Zone): Gate: Nanachi / Veeranahosahalli (near Hunsur/Kutta).

Dense teak and rosewood forests with open meadows, best for tiger and Leopard sightings in the deep woods.

  • Zone B (Kabini/River Zone): Gate: Kakanakote (near the Kabini dam).

The Black Panther, huge Elephant herds, and Marsh Crocodiles. This zone is also where Boat Safaris operate

Best Time to Visit

  • March to May: As the forest dries out, visibility increases and predators like the Black Panther and Tigers are frequently seen.
  • October to February: Ideal for birdwatching and photography. The forest is lush, and the air is crisp. Migratory birds like the Osprey and Grey-headed Fish Eagle are active.
  • June to September: While the park is technically open year-round (unlike North Indian parks), safaris are frequently cancelled during heavy rain.

Safari Timings

  • Morning Safari: 6:30 AM – 11:00 AM
  • Afternoon Safari: 2:30 PM – 6:30 PM
