Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve

About

Known as the “Jewel of Vidarbha,” Tadoba is characterized by hilly terrain and the expansive Tadoba Lake. It is a best-selling wildlife destination in Maharashtra due to its high frequency of “multi-generational” tiger sightings.

History

The park draws its name from Taru, a local Gond tribal chief legacy who was killed in a legendary encounter with a tiger. A shrine dedicated to him still exists on the banks of the lake, visited by locals during festivals.

Wildlife in Tadoba national park

  • Royal Bengal Tiger: The superstar of the park; Tadoba is famous for iconic tigers like the late “Maya” and “Matkasur.”
  • Indian Leopard: Highly successful here, often seen in the peripheral buffer zones or lounging in the rocky outcrops.
  • Sloth Bear: Shaggy and vocal foragers that are surprisingly easy to spot in Tadoba compared to other Indian parks.
  • Indian Wild Dog (Dhole): Ferocious pack hunters known for their distinct whistling calls and strategic group hunting.
  • Indian Gaur (Bison): Massive, muscular bovines that roam the bamboo thickets and meadows in large, peaceful herds.

Zones

Moharli Zone: The park’s most popular hub, famous for its high tiger density and the iconic Telia Lake area.

Kolara Zone: A central access point from Nagpur known for hilly terrain and highly active buffer zones like Madnapur.

Navegaon Zone: A scenic, quieter alternative in the north that offers peaceful drives and great sightings near Nimdela.

Pangdi & Zari Zone: Located in the rugged southern Kolsa range, it provides a raw, dense forest experience for adventurous travelers.
