Vansda National Park
About
In 2026, Vansda National Park stands as one of Gujarat’s most untouched and serene forest escapes. Spread across the lush foothills of the Western Ghats extension in South Gujarat, this compact yet incredibly rich national park is a paradise for nature lovers seeking raw wilderness over commercial tourism.
Unlike larger parks known for tiger safaris, Vansda offers something different—thick, almost rainforest-like greenery, narrow forest paths, and a peaceful atmosphere where nature speaks louder than engines. Located near the town of Vansda in Navsari district, it feels like stepping into a hidden green world far removed from city life.
History
Vansda forest once belonged to the royal family of Vansda State and was historically protected as a private hunting reserve.
After India’s independence, the area was recognized for its rich biodiversity and officially declared a National Park in 1979 to ensure conservation of its unique forest ecosystem.
Unlike many other reserves, commercial logging was never allowed here, which is why the forest remains dense and relatively undisturbed even today.
Wildlife
Though Vansda does not have tigers, it is home to a surprisingly diverse range of wildlife hidden within its dense forest cover.
- Indian Leopard: The top predator of the park. Elusive and rarely spotted, leopards silently rule the dense teak forests.
- Sloth Bear: Occasionally seen foraging in quieter forest patches.
- Four-horned Antelope (Chousingha): A rare species found in this region.
- Other Mammals: Hyena, Jungle Cat, Rhesus Macaque, Hanuman Langur, Indian Civet, and Giant Squirrel.
- Reptiles: Pythons, monitor lizards, and several snake species inhabit the forest floor.
- Birding Paradise: Over 150 bird species including Woodpeckers, Hornbills, Hill Mynas, and the vibrant Paradise Flycatcher. Vansda is especially attractive for serious birdwatchers due to its silent and undisturbed habitat.
